What’s Your Favorite Sports Movie?
Sal is constantly disappointed when the red netflix envelopes arrive: "Another jock movie??" he sighs.
But, he refuses to take control of the queue so the emotional jockishness will continue.
Today I watched, "When We Were Kings" while I rode the trainer. It was fantastic! (I can’t sit through movies but spinning through them works wonders.)
Of course, my favorite part was when Ali’s mother explains how he got into boxing:
His bike was stolen and the police officer that he reported to happened to train kids to box.
"You want to learn how to box?" the guy asks him.
"Yeah. Cuz if I ever find who stole my bike I’m gonna beat the crap out of them."
Ha! A stolen bike starts the career of one of the greatest boxers in the history of the world! That’s awesome.
I digress.
I love sports movies. I was raised on them. It all started with "The Natural", of course. Then In high school I watched "A League of Our Own" about 400 times, sobbing convulsively through every single viewing. (No, really.)
Other favorites include:
- Miracle
- Breaking Away
- Triplets of Belleville
- Field of Dreams
- SandLot
- Bend it Like Beckham
- Prefontaine
- Hoosiers
- American Flyer
What are yours?

A League of Their Own is hands-down my favourite. I cry like a baby every time. If I’m watching with my girl friends, they’re all crying too, and then we all descend into giggles about it because there’s no crying in baseball!
We Are Marshall is another favourite. It’s all macho and sporty and tough and hopeful, but also crushingly sad.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who cries at that movie :).
I forgot one other one: “Radio” We can count that as one of Sal’s favorites also, along with Pure Sweet Hell (cyclocross).

Sherry - I think you read the post wrong. Caddyshack isn’t about a sport - it’s about golf.

My favorite sports flicks:
Bend It Like Beckham
Triplets of Belleville
Red Light Go (bike messengers count, eh?)
Murderball
AND–the one that you will want to soccer-punch me in the titties for–
SAVE THE LAST DANCE
Because I have a thing for cheesy movies about kids who want to be dancers. Because I believe that dancing is a sport. Because the girl, in the end, gets into Julliard. And that’s no fucking joke. Because the movie has cheesy dialogue and hip hop dance moves that are pretty sick, truth be told. I could never move like that. I can barely drop it like it’s hot without errupting into Mt. Vesuvius style laughter.
So since I think that dance is a sport, let me also add two movies, one of which you can rib me for until I am old and even shorter than I already am:
CENTER STAGE
MAD HOT BALLROOM
(I have a major love affair with documentaries)

Jon - killer. Now in the queue.
Kathy - now we’re talkin’ baby!
Steph - Murderball! Yes, that should have been on my list, too. What a great film!
I’m going to sign off with a no-comment on the dancing thing.
But I feel you.
Actually, one of the PV bike racers is a competitive ballroom dancer.

Heids!
I’ve told you about this one, but I’m going to tell you again.
Watch “The Rocket.”
Someone also said “Murderball.” Watch that too.
