The Secret to the Cyclocross Remount: Herb Brooks Knows It’s Not a Miracle

So, last week I killed a bird and gained a remount.  My mother sent me an email that said, “Poor birdie.”  My old friend Tej commented likewise.
Yesterday, I got my new racing bike.  The deal has been in the works for a long time, so for me, the novelty had worn off a bit.  I […]

Stupid-Easy Pecan-Crusted Salmon.

I’m not a huge fan of cooked salmon.  Raw?  Yes.  Give it to me raw all day long, baby.  Cooked is a different story.
This has partially to do with my stint as a line worker in a fish-processing plant at the age of 17. That’s a story for another time, because this particular blog entry […]

Homemade Pizza Night: Bigtime Italian Fun on a Budget

My life is dominated by Sicilians (don’t call them Italians, dude). Sal and I lived with his parents and sister for two years in San Jose, California and if you think living with your parents sounds like a nightmare, think again. Those Sicilians know how to party.
Besides guzzling his father’s homemade hooch, singing along […]

Triple (Yes, You Read That Right) Chocolate Pecan Protein Shake

Eat your heart out, ErikV.  I have improved upon the double chocolate pecan protein shake… some thought it was not possible.

Ten Rules for Good Nutrition from Berardi

Dude.
Sal and I collaborated last night to make a bomb-shizilly good dessert.  There are pictures and everything!  But, wouldn’t you know it, my accountant is beating down my door for Q4 paperwork.  While I go deal with grumpy Mr. Moneypants, I thought I’d post John Berardi’s article, "Changing the Rules of Good Nutrition" for you […]

Double Chocolate Pecan Shake (Yes, I swear it’s good for you.)

Sal has a hardcore sweet tooth.
Protein shakes have come a long way and, in general, they taste pretty good when made with dairy or soy milk - especially Jay Robb.  My sister especially loves BSN Chocolate Fudge flavor.
However, even chocolatey protein shakes are sometimes not enough to satisfy my sweets-craving boyfriend.  But I finally figured […]

Hey! I found the proof! It was in the pudding! (P90X Progress Update)

If there’s one thing I know for sure, I am a big old sucker for data.
Why?
Tracking achievement in quantifiable terms is ridiculously motivating.
Today, at my second body composition test, the numbers gave me valuable data for moving forward - and provided a huge motivational boost.

Surviving my Business Trip: My Nutrition Emergency Kit

If there is one thing that will make the difference between your success and failure when you start any kind of program, it is planning.
Planning, planning, and more planning.  Plan for absolutely everything possible, and then be smart when you encounter something for which you could not have planned.
I had a big meeting in Seattle […]

This is Your Mouth on P90X: Island Pork Tenderloin Salad

Island Pork Tenderloin Salad from the P90X Cookbook.

If you like pork, this recipe is ridiculously good.  I made it for Sal on Saturday night and he spent the whole dinner moaning in delight.  There’s nothing better than making a Sicilian man moan over food. :)  The crunchiness of the cabbage and red peppers in the […]

Thoughts on the Holidays: Ten Tips for Success

I hate all those holiday party survival guides that tell you to stick to the veggie tray, don’t you?
It’s like, "No shit, Sherlock."
Give me something more.  Give me something better.
I’m headed down to my Sicilian in-laws place for Christmas and I’m already starting to get nervous about how to maintain my program while I’m there.  […]
