Sunshine Roller, Sunday Macchiato

Highway 30 on a long Sunday.  Sal is breaking legs in the Master B category out at Sauvie Island and I’m late.  Too late to see him finish but just in time to hear the grand retelling.
The after-race part is always better anyway.
My kit is Super Relax and despite the fact that it’s Sunday night […]

Blinding White Joy.

Summer morning.  Chilly track.
"Natalie!  My hands are numb!"
"Mine too!"
Mittens in August?
Heading into the third turn of the second 800 meter interval the sun powers over the top of the building to our east.  Blinding, white, glowing.
We’re overexposed and unbalanced.  Washed in a light that hints of winter.  Low sun like that, you can’t trust it.
There […]

Some Kind of Wonderful.

Birthdays.
Cakes and keg ordered. I have an entire army of boys working on my behalf to throw me a party worthy of the gaggle of fantastic friends who are going to turn up.  I’m stunned and stopped and startled by the sheer amount of effort involved.
I knew the command was loaded when I announced "Let’s […]

Coming Clean. Coming Around.

It’s August 21st.  I’ll be 31 in two days.
In general, I feel like about seventy million bucks.
But this month has been hard for me. It’s "Christmas season" for my biggest client (read: long hours making marketing for people), it’s a big month for event for photography (read: long weekends working), and I just wrote something […]

Homemade Pizza Night: Bigtime Italian Fun on a Budget

My life is dominated by Sicilians (don’t call them Italians, dude). Sal and I lived with his parents and sister for two years in San Jose, California and if you think living with your parents sounds like a nightmare, think again. Those Sicilians know how to party.
Besides guzzling his father’s homemade hooch, singing along […]

Back to the Track: Speed Workouts Without Spew

The psychological progression of waking up early for hard workouts always entertains me.
5:30am Alarm: Roll over. Hit snooze. Tell myself I should send a cancellation text because doesn’t it look kind of gray and cold outside?
5:40am Snooze Alarm #2: Roll over. Hit snooze again. Tell myself I will get up […]

Happy Birthday to the Shecko

He cooks, he cleans, he tunes our army of bikes… and that’s just the beginning.
The boy that I affectionately refer to as a mule turns 38 today. He’s as Sicilain, as spirited, and as sweet as ever. If there was ever a reason to celebrate then you have it here: that this man continues to […]

Keep Portland Glorious: 9th and Sherrett

We have a big ride planned for tomorrow so we go out early in the morning for a short spin just to remind the muscles how to make the bike move forward.
Sal opens it up on Springwater, per usual, and I suck wheel like a champ. There’s a chill to the morning, but the sky […]

Climbing Out of a Slump

"You’re in a slump. Put your kit on."  Sal is standing in the bedroom holding my bibs.
I am laying on the big king bed holding my ugly doll with a pillow over my head: "I DONT WANT TO GO!"
That is only half true but I am throwing a tantrum so this has to be dramatic.
"Yes […]

Boulder, Colorado: Part Two

12 hours in a conference chair and I’m at my wits end.
I have been eating Nectar Bars and apples stolen from the hotel lobby display.  Cottage cheese from the grocery store.  Baby carrots. This trip is going down on the cheap.
I just tell myself it’s like I’m backpacking and the justification offers a little […]
